Sofia Lucas believes that magazines don’t have to be perfect, they just need to have the same impact on the team that creates them with the world that reads them. When she was 18 she swore she would never work for a magazine, but many years later print publications became her strongest passion.

Her professional life began in a clothing store with men’s shirts. She started working there because she loved traveling and needed a boost for her budget. She later realised how much this fashion business had taught her, which helped her a lot in her later career. Her first job in her field of study was a graphic designer at an advertising company.

Working as an art director for more than 20 years, Sofia Lucas took over as Editor in Chief of Madame Figaro Portugal for three years, before co-founding Lighthouse Publishing in 2015, the house that now publishes both Vogue and GQ in Portugal. Since 2017, Sofia Lucas has been the Editor in Chief of Vogue Portugal. With a strong background in Arts, she is passionate about her work, magazines, print and a serious advocate of putting your heart in everything you do.

Lucas and her team have managed to transfer their own personality and inspiration to every page of the magazine. The cover of April 2020 stars a couple kissing wearing a mask, sending a message of hope. “Covid-19, fear will not stop us” is written on Vogue Portugal’s April 2020 cover, proving that a fashion magazine is much more than a record of trends.

On our upcoming Instagram Live with Sofia Lucas, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Portugal and Vogue Greece’s Editor-in-Chief, Τhaleia Karafyllidou, we will discuss the power of image during a pandemic and the ideas behind the April cover of Vogue Portugal ‘Freedom on Hold’.
