Όταν αποφασίσαμε να αφιερώσουμε το τεύχος Οκτωβρίου στα icons, στις γυναίκες που με το στιλ τους έγραψαν και γράφουν ιστορία, δεν χρειάστηκε πολλή σκέψη για να καταλήξουμε στο ότι η κεντρική φιγούρα του θα ήταν η Μελίνα Μερκούρη. Κατά σύμπτωση, ο Οκτώβριος είναι ο γενέθλιος μήνας της, ενώ και το 2020 είναι αφιερωμένο σε εκείνη. Υπάρχουν όμως πολύ περισσότεροι λόγοι που επιβάλλουν την «παρουσία» της σε ένα τέτοιο αφιέρωμα. Η Μελίνα Μερκούρη είναι η γυναίκα που όλες θα θέλαμε να είμαστε. Ασυμβίβαστη μέχρι το τέλος, αναρχική θα έλεγε κανείς στη σκέψη και στη δράση της, παρά τις αστικές της καταβολές, με έμφυτη θεατρικότητα στις εκφράσεις και στις κινήσεις της, ταυτόχρονα γήινη και μυθική, επιβαλλόταν με την προσωπικότητα και το στιλ της – κομψή και μποέμ μαζί.
Η Μελίνα Μερκούρη συνεχίζει να μας εμπνέει, όπως εξάλλου και άλλες γυναίκες από το παρελθόν και το παρόν, οι οποίες, είτε συμβαδίζοντας με την εποχή τους είτε πρωτοπορώντας η καθεμία στον τομέα της, μεγαλούργησαν στιλιστικά. Από τη μοναδική Faye Danaway και την ντίβα Catherine Deneuve μέχρι νεότερα είδωλα σαν τη σαρωτική Madonna ή την ατίθαση Kate Moss, όλες αυτές οι γυναίκες άφησαν και αφήνουν ισχυρό το στίγμα τους, επιβεβαιώνοντας με τον πιο απόλυτο τρόπο ότι το στιλ είναι έμφυτο – ένα ακόμα «χαρακτηριστικό» που κάνει κάποιον να ξεχωρίζει. Όπως έμφυτη είναι και η ιδιαίτερη δύναμη που κρύβουν κάποιες γυναίκες μέσα τους, αυτό το ένστικτο που τις καθοδηγεί σε επιλογές ζωής οι οποίες τις φέρνουν στο προσκήνιο της κοινωνίας, της πολιτικής, της επιστήμης, του αθλητισμού, της δράσης γενικότερα. Γυναίκες που με τη συμβολή τους σε έναν οποιονδήποτε σκοπό ξεχωρίζουν και γίνονται υγιή πρότυπα για τις επόμενες γενιές, δραστήριες και αυτόφωτες, στον αντίποδα της επιδρομής των influencers. Γυναίκες, τελικά, που οραματίζονται ένα καλύτερο μέλλον και επιστρατεύουν όλες τους τις δυνάμεις για να πετύχουν τον στόχο τους. Γυναίκες που τολμούν να ονειρεύονται.

When we decided to dedicate this October issue to icons, the women that have written and continue writing history with their style, it didn’t take much thought to conclude that Melina Mercouri would be the central figure. Coincidentally, October is her birth month, and 2020 is year dedicated to her. Still, there are many more reasons why her “presence” in such a tribute is deemed essential. Melina Mercouri is the woman most of us aspired to become. Uncompromising till the very end, an anarchist one could say regarding her way of thinking and acting, despite her background, with an innate theatricality in her expressions and movement, earthly and mythical at the same time, she asserted herself with her personality and style – elegant, as well as bohemian.
Melina Mercouri continues to inspire us, just like other women from the past and present, who, either in line with the spirit of their times, or pioneering in their fields, have achieved stylistic greatness. From the unique Faye Danaway and the diva Catherine Deneuve, to more recent idols like the storming Madonna or the rebellious Kate Moss, all these women have made and are still making their mark, ascertaining that style is innate – another “characteristic” that makes someone stand out. Just like the special power that some women have hidden within, that instinct that guides them in life choices that bring them at the forefront of society, politics, science, sports. Women that stand out and become healthy models for the following generations with their contribution to a cause, women that are vigorous and self-invented, as opposed to the influencers storming all social media. Women that envision a better future and employ all their powers in order to achieve their goal. Women that dare to dream.
