Editorial: The future has no other reality than as present hope*

Όταν ξεκινούσε το 2020, ούτε καν οι καπνοί από τις τεράστιες φωτιές στην Αυστραλία δεν μπορούσαν να μας προϊδεάσουν για το ότι το μέλλον θα ήταν ακόμα πιο σκοτεινό. Όλοι οι συνειδητοί πολίτες απ’ άκρη σ’ άκρη της Γης γίνονταν θεατές μιας εν δυνάμει οικολογικής καταστροφής, ασφαλείς ωστόσο στον μικρόκοσμό τους. Ή έτσι νόμιζαν. Σε μόλις λίγους μήνες, άλλη μία «φωτιά», εξίσου ή και περισσότερο φονική, εξαπλώθηκε με ταχύτητα σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Η πανδημία, μια κατάσταση που κανείς μας δεν περίμενε ότι θα ζούσε, ήρθε να μας απειλήσει και να αλλάξει άρδην όλα όσα θεωρούσαμε δεδομένα. Και εν μέσω αυτής της πρωτόγνωρης κατάστασης, ο συστημικός ρατσισμός χτυπούσε και πάλι την πόρτα των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής, προκαλώντας μεγάλες διαδηλώσεις που γρήγορα εξαπλώθηκαν στην Ευρώπη και αλλού, υπό την ομπρέλα του κινήματος Black Lives Matter.

Την ίδια στιγμή, σε κατάσταση καραντίνας, όλοι αρχίσαμε να βλέπουμε τον κόσμο κάπως αλλιώς. Λιγότερο ή περισσότερο μόνοι πίσω από κλειστές πόρτες, με πολύ χρόνο για ενδοσκόπηση, αρχίσαμε να βιώνουμε μια δυστοπία. Μας έλειψαν οι επαφές και οι αγκαλιές, οι διασκεδάσεις, η φύση… Μας έλειψε η ελευθερία να κάνουμε αυτό που θέλαμε τη στιγμή που το επιθυμούσαμε. Και όταν ήρθε η ώρα να βγούμε, ναι, ήμασταν αλλαγμένοι – ακόμα κι αν δεν το συνειδητοποιούσαμε.

Αυτή η συνειδητοποίηση ήρθε σιγά σιγά, μαζί με μια εσωτερική δύναμη την οποία, ίσως, δεν πιστεύαμε ότι είχαμε. Και με την ελπίδα ότι όλα σύντομα θα άλλαζαν.

Το πιστεύαμε όλοι στην ομάδα, όταν βρεθήκαμε ξανά μαζί μετά από μήνες στους γνώριμους χώρους του γραφείου μας. Το πίστευαν και όλοι αυτοί με τους οποίους μιλούσαμε στις υπόλοιπες εκδόσεις της Vogue ανά τον κόσμο. Και κάπως έτσι, αυτή η μεγάλη οικογένεια συντονίστηκε σε έναν κοινό τόπο: το τεύχος Σεπτεμβρίου και των 26 χωρών στις οποίες εκδίδεται το περιοδικό θα κυκλοφορούσε με ίδιο θέμα – την ελπίδα. Για πρώτη φορά, όλος ο κόσμος μια αγκαλιά. Ήδη από τον Αύγουστο η μία έκδοση ακολουθούσε την άλλη, εικονογραφώντας την ελπίδα με τον δικό της ιδιαίτερο τρόπο, μέσα από εξώφυλλα και θέματα εστιασμένα στο μεγάλο ζητούμενο των ημερών. Να και η δική μας σειρά, λοιπόν, με ένα εικαστικό εξώφυλλο που φέρει την υπογραφή του διεθνούς Έλληνα Δημήτρη Παπαϊωάννου, ενός καλλιτέχνη που ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του ζωγραφίζοντας και τώρα επανέρχεται με ένα αλληγορικό σκίτσο, μια μορφή ούτε άνδρα ούτε γυναίκας, με δυναμικά χαρακτηριστικά και βαθύ βλέμμα, που μας δίνει το δικό της μήνυμα: Hope lives in us.

Ναι, η ελπίδα ζει μέσα μας. Και έτσι προχωράμε πάντα μπροστά. Σε ένα μέλλον που θέλουμε, σε ένα μέλλον που αξίζουμε. Σε ένα μέλλον που πρέπει να προσπαθήσουμε για να το κατακτήσουμε.

The future has no other reality than as present hope*

At the beginning of 2020, not even the smoke emerging for the great fires in Australia could hint at the fact that the future would be even darker. Citizens from all parts of the Earth were becoming spectators to a potential environmental disaster, while being safe in their microcosm. Or, so they though. In just a few months, another “fire”, equally or more lethal, spread rapidly all over the world. The pandemic, a situation that no one expected to experience, came to threaten our lives and change all the things we took for granted. During this unprecedented situation, systemic racism was once again knocking on the United States’ door, causing big protests that quickly spread through Europe and elsewhere, under the umbrella of the Black Lives Matter movement.

At the same time, quarantined, we all started viewing the world in another way. More or less alone behind closed doors, with plenty of time in our hands for introspection, we began experiencing a dystopia. We missed contact and hugs, having fun, being in touch with nature… We missed the freedom to do what we wanted when we desired to do it. And when the time came for us to get out again, yes, we were changed – even if we didn’t realize it at the time.

This realization came slowly, along with an inner strength that we probably didn’t believe we had. And along with hope that everything would soon change.

Each and every member of our team believed so, when we got back together in our offices after months. The people we talked with from all Vogue editions in the world also believed so. And, like that, this big family tuned in on some common ground: The September issue of all 26 countries in the Vogue family would have a common subject – Hope. For the first time, the whole world is coming together. From August, one edition after another started illustrating hope in their own, special way, through covers and subjects focusing on the most important issue of our times. Here’s our turn, then, with an illustrated cover bearing the signature of international Greek artist Dimitris Papaioannou, who commenced his career with painting and is now back with an allegoric sketch, a form of neither a man nor a woman, with distinctive characteristics and a deep gaze that offers us its own message: Hope lives in us.

Yes, hope does live in us. And thus we always move forward. Towards a future that we want, a future that we deserve. A future that we must try to conquer.
